Home visits

I had the privilege of visiting two homes this morning. 

First was a woman who came to our clinic yesterday. We needed to do some followup. 

It is also the home of our newest resident, Moses. He is coming to live with us tomorrow. 

He is the one in orange. I talked with him and he is excited about living at the VOE. He is also excited about going to school.

We gave the mother some food and did a quick check up.

Then, we went to see Agalasi, one of our house mothers. She had a stroke during the holidays and has not been able to work. 

 

It was more of an adventure to get to her house. All our vehicles were busy so we had to go on motorbikes. 

I must say I enjoyed the ride. 

Agalasi is doing much better. She is walking and talking well. She still has some weakness but it is improving. 

Kim checked her out. 

We prayed with her and her family. We also tried to encourage her to get her strength back so she can return to work. 

Then, we got back on the "peke-pekes " and rode back to the village. 

It was great to be able to minister to these two families. 

A Baby's heartbeat!

In the last post, I talked about teaching myself to work the new ultrasound machine. 

Today, Carolynn, a nurse practitioner that is visiting from UNG, used the ultrasound on a patient!  (I got to show how to use the system)

She found the 4 week fetus!  After she found it, we called everyone in to see. 

Bonus:

 We were able to see a flicker which was the heartbeat!  It was amazing! 

 I had heard that it was a living being even that soon, but to see the heartbeat was incredible!

God's great design!  Amazing. 

Ultrasound Technician

Brenda must think very highly of me.

 The other day, she said, "You are good at figuring things out and simplifying them down to step by step. I need you to figure out how to work the new ultrasound machine. "

(What?  Really?)

I replied, "Ok, I can take a look at it. ". 

(Chuckling under my breath)

So, I sat down and read the entire book. 

Then I decided I would just try it on myself. (Fun)

I rolled it around a bit, took some screen shots, learned how to measure. Adjusted the depth and contrast. Took a loop video. 

I know how to work the system!  

Unfortunately, I have NO IDEA what I am looking at!

Back in Uganda

I arrived back in Uganda on Friday. I must say the flights were not that great this time, old planes and turbulence made for a long trip. I do get to say that I have used one of those great little white bags that you find in the seat back pocket!  Very handy!

I was great to see every one here. I didn't realize how much I was missing them. 

Simba was especially excited to see me. 

That night he gave me a special welcome by chewing my head. I know, sounds weird. 

I am resolved this year. I cannot fall into the trap of busyness. I need to slow down. Build more relationships with people. Sit on the porch and watch the clouds. Listen to the birds. Let God speak. 

If you know me well, you know this is difficult for me. I am making a conscious effort to slow down, smell the roses if you will. 

We will see. 

Happy and Grumpy

These kids are at my house every day. Their mother, Harriet, works for us.  They are so cute!   

Their personalities are complete opposite.   Sam is so congenial, happy, friendly.

  Sylvia is moody and grumpy at times.  Then other times she is laughing and playing.  Sam always talks so sweet to her when she is grumpy, trying to cheer her up!

Adult Literacy Graduation of One!

We had our Adult Literacy Graduation on Wednesday, November 18.  These are adults from the community that come on Wednesday and Saturday to learn English, writing and reading.

We had one student that Claudia felt was ready for graduation.  She actually already knew how to read when she came, we think she was looking for a job.

We will begin again in February of 2016.
